A lovely quality, vintage African Benin tribal bronze ceremonial/medicine pot, Nigeria, c1940. Cast in the traditional lost wax method, the quality of the casting is great. The body is decorated with an incised geometric pattern and crocodiles climbing up the sides. The lid continues this theme, with a pair of warriors fighting a crocodile - plus one in the crocodile's mouth.
The container has aged beautifully with good colour/patina. As is usual with the lost wax casting method there are various casting holes and imperfections, but these are exactly what one would expect in an old tribal bronze, and merely add to its character.
