A rare large West African tribal hardwood Ju-Ju or medicine jar. The jar is beautifully and profusely hand-carved with a range of traditional tribal motifs, including a scorpion, animals, tribal masks, etc. The quality of the carving is very good, indicating that this was a ceremonial piece. All sides, including the lid are carved - another indication of quality.
We would estimate it dates to around 1900-1930. It displays a couple of small chips to the wood around the edges and some historic woodworm holes (which are dormant, but have been treated anyway)... all very much as you would expect from an old tribal piece.
